Welcome back to a brand new season of Charitable Chit Chat with Cathy & Claire. Our special guest is one of the top philanthropy experts in the country and author of several important books about the charitable sector, Doug White. We asked Doug to bring us two cases of GOOD GIFTS GONE BAD and both offer fascinating insights into just what happens when a donor becomes very, very unhappy with how their charitable gift is being used (and it's not as they intended). One case centers on a 50k gift to a no-kill animal shelter in New Jersey, where the donors asked for their donation to be returned after the nonprofit didn't build a specific type of facility promised to the donors. The nonprofit refused, the donors sued - and won. The other case involved years of legal wrangling, racking up tens of millions of dollars in attorney fees -- when the heirs of a supermarket fortune challenged Princeton University. This case is the subject of Doug's well-received book Abusing Donor Intent: The Robertson Family's Epic Lawsuit Against Princeton University. Co-host Cathy Sheffield shares her thoughts on several very important matters - gift agreements and stewardship and Co-host Claire Meyerhoff discusses the "self inflicted bad public relations" angle of these scenarios. We hope you enjoy this fantastic episode and welcome back to Charitable Chit Chat with Cathy & Claire! You can listen here on CharitableChitChat.com or on Apple Podcast, Spotify, iHeart Radio or other podcast provider.
